Biological agriculture

What is Biological Agriculture?

Biological Agriculture is essentially an agricultural production method developing a systemic approach as regards agricultural concerns, seen as organizations where various mechanisms (soil, cultures, organic substance cycle, rearing, natural environment, flora and fauna) are functionally connected and interacting.
Biological Agriculture is a self sufficient system based on the use of products and processes present in nature, with the exclusion of fertilizers, pesticides and synthetic chemical medicines.

Every “La Finestra sul Cielo” product has been subjected to an accurate selection of ingredients, originating from biological cultivations, which respect the environment. Biological agriculture forbids the use of synthetic chemical substances in the treatments (insecticides, pesticides, weed killers) and certifies only eco-compatible natural cultivation techniques, and excludes the use of OGM raw materials. The entire biological production line, from seed to finished product, is certified by an officially recognized verification Organization.
Ours is “Q Certificazioni srl”.

Biological Agriculture has especially made a choice to reject cultivation, breeding and use as regards the production of Genetically Modified Organisms (OGM). Minimizing the presence of chemical synthesis substances in the production cycle, defending biodiversity and being finalized with soil conservation and the development of a food production system compatible with environmental requirements, Biological Agriculture represents one of the basic elements of a new relationship between human beings and the ecosystem.

A biological food always guarantees that the entire production line, from seed to the finished product, has been respected.

  • BIOLOGICAL AGRICULTURE'S MAIN BASIS

    - producing genuine foods of high nutritional quality;

    - considering the vast ecological and social impact of agricultural systems;

    - working with natural systems rather than seek to dominate them;

    - maintaining and improving the biological cycles of the business agriculture system, involving microorganisms, the flora and fauna of the soil, animals and plants;

    - maintaining and developing the long term biological fertility of the soils;

    - using renewable resources in agricultural systems organized at a local level as much as possible;

    - working in a “closed system” as much as possible with particular attention to the recycling of the organic substance and nutritional elements;

    - assuring sufficient profit and work satisfaction for agricultural producers in a healthy environment;

    - giving each reared animal living conditions that allow them to express all aspects as regards their inborn behaviour;

    - avoiding any form of pollution that can originate from production activities;

    - maintaining the genetic diversity of the agricultural system and the surrounding environment including the protection of plants and natural habitat;

    - forbidding the use of genetically handled organisms (OGM) in every phase of biological agriculture.

    Biological agriculture is regulated on a community level by EEC Regulation 2092/91and its subsequent modifications and integrations.
    With this Regulation, the Community wished to encourage a more appropriate direction for agricultural productions and attribute proper attention to environmental protection requirements, with the need to guarantee a balance between financial objectives and natural environmental conservation to the rural world, and to supply consumers with genuine products checked along the entire production line.

  • PRODUCTION CONVERSION AND CERTIFICATION

    For biological agricultural productions’ certification, the agricultural business has to apply biological agricultural standards for a definite period of conversion to biological agriculture of at least two years before sowing or, in the case of perennial cultures different from meadows, at least three years before harvest. The initial date for the completion of such a period is that of the notification or of the feasibility visit, if this is before the notification. Before the entire conversion period has elapsed, but moreover not before 12 months from the initial date, the productions can be certified as a “product being converted to biological agriculture".
    In some cases the conversion cases can be prolonged or shortened, for the entire business or for part of it, account taken of the previous use of the plots. With the conversion period elapsed, the productions may be certified with the wording "a biological agriculture product".

  • TRANSFORMATION OF PRODUCTS

    The basic principles for the preparation of biological products to guarantee the authenticity of the productions, preserve the nutritional quality and the healthiness of the food products, are the following:
    - use biological agricultural raw materials;
    - avoid waste and pollution;
    - reduce the use of energy and non renewable resources to a minimum;
    - reduce the use of additives to a minimum, use moreover limited to those contained in the authorized list;
    - the upkeep of good practices for transformation and conditioning adopting authorized procedures and as far as possible, "mild technologies".

  • CHARACTERISTICS OF THE FOOD FACTORY

    Preparation industries concerns which work products obtained with biological agriculture method and especially the companies which work other products also, must have characteristics that as such can guarantee the following points:

    - be in regulation with the agricultural and food sector bodies of legislation;
    - keep transformation and/or conditioning systems exclusively for biological products or, as an alternative, physically and temporally separate the processing;
    - have the possibility of keeping the storage of biological products separate;
    - guarantee the identification and traceability of the batches and avoid mixes with other products;
    - all staff involved in the process must be in regulation with health standards and receive adequate training on good working practices as regards biological products.
    Generally speaking biological foods can only be produced via mechanical, physical and fermentative processes or by a combination of the same.

    A biological food always guarantees that the entire production line, from seed to the finished product, has been respected.
